Bullhead charm necklace: Katie Mullally*
Ever since this beautifully-packaged necklace arrived through my letterbox, I knew it was fast going to become a favourite. I’ve always loved silver: it’s versatile, classy and totally timeless and this Katie Mullally piece is absolutely no exception. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an advocate of bullhead decorations – in fact if I’m honest, they creep me out. I’m a vegan, how could I possibly appreciate a preserved bull’s head stuck to a wall or hanging above a fireplace? I couldn’t. And I don’t. But silver is different. To me, this charm embodies power and fearlessness – qualities that at this time in my life, I feel are extremely important. I’ve recently realised the significance of confidence; confidence in yourself with regards to goals, hopes and dreams. If you don’t believe in yourself, who else will? Trust me, I’m not there yet, not by a long way. But I’m definitely working on it and it’s the little things that enhance that feeling of confidence and nudge you in the right direction of courage; it could be wise words from a stranger, a quote that struck you as particularly significant or even some kind of symbolic clothing or accessory. Yep, that’s right – I’m linking your sartorial choices to your thoughts and emotional state. But it’s absolutely true, what we decide to wear and how we carry ourselves is a direct reflection of how we’re feeling, who we want to be and how we want people to think of us.
So I wear my bull’s head charm necklace with pride and actually I wear it very often (I’ll admit it, at least 6 days out of 7). It’s a far cry from my usual ‘dainty’ accessory choices and it therefore represents the change happening in my life and in myself. I’m currently “going against the flow”, moving against the tide, freeing myself from the shackles of social norm and expectations – whatever you want to call it, I’m embracing independence and doing the opposite of what so many expected of me. And do you know what? It feels pretty good. I’m on the road to happiness. And I’m gonna enjoy the journey.
Love, Beth xo.
