‘Smart casual’. It’s the dress code we all dread on party invitations, the juxtaposing two words that cause endless confusion and frantic fumbling in wardrobes worldwide. What does it even mean?
By definition: neat, conventional, yet relatively informal in style. Pardon? Exactly.
To me, smart casual means feeling appropriately dressed in meetings but still wearing the right footwear to run between appointments and dodge people on the underground. One too many times I’ve worn highly inappropriate footwear and been spotted hobbling at Waterloo, grasping at flimsy plasters and biting my lip in an attempt not to cry. I’ve worn good shoes, beautiful shoes but comfortable shoes? Not all that often. Not until I bought these Nike trainers, which allow me to walk, run and jump my way through a busy day in the city and which I unashamedly want in every colour available.
So trainers = casual. How do you smarten up your look?
This camel one from Boohoo is a lovely long length and sits close to the body, keeping you warm rather than swamping you. Its wide lapels make a statement and its impressive quality would have you believe it was £450, not £45.
As you know from this post, as well as numerous Snapchat ramblings and Insta-snaps, I’m a big fan of Genevieve’s knitwear. Using premium materials and traditional techniques, she produces striking, individual designs of supreme quality. And if you’re scrimping on the coat, why not splurge on the knit?
Nothing says ‘smart’ like a structured handbag. Winged, boxed, you name it. It instantly transforms your look, taking you from popping out for coffee to let’s get down to business.
So conclusively, I’m closer to nailing this sartorial riddle than I realised. But I’m intrigued, what’s your idea of ‘smart casual’?
Love, Beth xo.
