Okay, it’s confession time. I can’t iron to save my life (I end up ironing creases into clothes rather than out of them), I’m still a tiny bit scared of the dark and as a self-employed individual, have absolutely no clue about the UK tax system. I don’t really understand politics (though thankfully social media educated me about the recent referendum), I rarely listen to the news because it makes me sad and I absolutely never read the paper. To put it simply, I feel like a poor excuse of an adult.
But I know I’m not alone.
Very often, I sit back, look around (read: scroll my Instagram feed) and think damn, everyone has their shit together. Everyone but me. People are getting engaged, having babies, buying houses and adopting pets while I’m sat at my desk watching them do these things from afar. Of course, this is very much age-dependent. I know that I’m one of the youngest in my industry and honestly? I really don’t want those things right now, not at all. Yet sometimes I can’t help but feel I have to do those things in order to be an “official adult”. Otherwise, how can I define myself as one?
AND YET. A quick phone call or text to a friend, whether they’re 20 or 27, makes me realise that no one feels like they have their shit together. I have friends that are engaged, friends with babies and friends that have gone to live halfway across the world. But just because they’ve done these things, doesn’t make them any more of an adult. In fact, they’re often just as confused about their own situations as I am. They’ve just been handed a different set of circumstances and chosen different paths.
And I think it’s important to remember this. Whether it’s your career, your love life or your finances; everyone is just winging it; making it up as they go along and hoping for the best. Sure, we have plans, goals, dreams. But guess what? Life is unpredictable. And when something doesn’t go to plan, that’s okay. In fact, it’s fun, exciting. It means change.
So the next time you’re worried that you can’t do something, WING IT. Give it a go. Try it out and see. Because I can assure you, that’s what we’re all doing.
