Standing on the terrace of YALI Mezze & Wine Bar at Four Seasons Bosphorus, I looked out over the river under the candy floss sky and thought this, this is why I do what I do. I felt blessed, overwhelmed and slightly heady that I had yet another beautiful location to tick off my bucket list, another experience that makes every late night and every I’m-about-to-tear-my-hair-out moment worth it.
Because it’s just so easy to give up. Whether it’s a new hobby you’re trying to pursue, a fitness goal that seems just out of reach or a job that feels like it’s going nowhere, it’s so easy to throw your hands up and declare that you’ve had enough, that you can’t go on. In a world where instant gratification is all too common, we have become so impatient in the pursuit of our goals. And I too, am guilty. You’ve perhaps noticed the sporadic and infrequent blog posts, the odd silent day on snapchat – something that makes me feel ashamed and guilty. But the combination of dealing with curveballs in my personal life, travelling and stress, it’s just all felt like too much. And of course, we all need to take time out. But the truth is, I allow the little niggles and setbacks to accumulate until I’m spiralling and I feel like I can’t stop. I close down, hibernate in the hope that it all goes away. And guess what? It doesn’t.
We have to face our fears to overcome them. We have to tackle our problems to solve them. We have to address our worries in order to dispel them. Because life? It can throw curveballs and create challenges. What shapes us as people is being able to navigate them, find our way through and excel in whatever we put our minds to. When the going gets tough, keep going. I promise you – you won’t regret it.
