Admittedly, I prefer matte lipsticks over glossy ones; they last longer, tend to be more pigmented and they definitely make more of a statement – giving you that bright, bold colour that somehow manages to stay put all day (even after you’ve licked your lips following a super-delicious lunch). However, during the colder months, matte lipsticks aren’t always the best option for your chapped, weathered lips. They can be extra-drying, causing flaking and prompting an emergency dash to Lush to pick up the Bubblegum Lip Scrub – not only a hero of a beauty product but a damn tasty one too.
So instead, during winter, I like to wear lipsticks that moisturise and nourish my lips, preventing the flakiness while stile giving me a long-lasting colour. If I’m being honest, finding one that matches that criteria has proved extremely tricky in the past and I’ve always ended up compromising on colour, being forced to opt for a more subtle version of the one I really wanted. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I tried these two Rich Formula lipsticks from Motives. They have a really creamy texture which allows you to create an even coverage with the colour, smoothing out fine lines rather than collecting in the creases of your lips, as a lot of lipsticks often do. When the colour has been applied, it looks shiny and luxurious. It’s not sticky or glossy (read: no danger of attracting flyaway hairs or biscuit crumbs) and the colour looks rich and vibrant, despite its sheen.
As I’ve always been a fan of a bold lip, the Berry Sexy is definitely my favourite. Although I sometimes opt for a nude colour either when I’ve created a smokey eye or when I’m generally wearing less make up, I tend to go for warmer, pinker tones rather than earthy brown tones like this one. It also very much depends on the pigment of your skin; blush tones are often more suited to paler skin and earth tones more suited to darker skin. Although I’m not that pale, I’m definitely not olive-skinned like my Mum!
So are these lipsticks long-lasting you ask? Well, like most lipsticks, they require ‘topping up’ throughout the day but less regularly than you might expect of a moisiturising formula. I re-applied the colours every couple of hours, usually after I’d had a coffee or something to eat. If you’re anything like me, you carry your makeup essentials round with you permamently and always have them to hand in case of an emergency (you never know what might happen, right?). It’s almost become habit for me to re-apply my lipstick throughout the day, I do it subconsciously. But what I’m saying is, you don’t need to – the colour will be just as vibrant with one or two re-applications.
Both of these lovely lipsicks retail at £12 but you can get 10% off by using the code 10offma at the checkout.
Tempted to try them? Do you have any winter lipstick recommendations?
