No matter where in the world I go, no matter how long for and no matter how hard I try not to, I end up packing my whole bathroom cabinet; oils, lotions, potions and everything in between. I just can't help myself. What if I need that vitamin spray that I've never used in my whole life? Why take one serum when I can take five and have the choice when I get there? Ridiculous, I know. And probably why, nine times out of ten, my suitcase is way over the 23kg baggage allowance.
But for my trip to Ibiza, I decided to challenge myself. Aside from makeup remover, these are the four products that I swore by over the course of 9 days - with very little else to assist in my effort to conceal typical symptoms of the morning-after-the-night-before (read: puffy eyes, dehydrated skin and slightly bedraggled hair - not counting the headache). I partnered up with Lookfantastic to choose a selection of my travel beauty essentials on a budget (less than £100 - and far more valuable than that extra bikini you had your eye on) and as these are products that I've been using and loving for years, I thought I'd share them with you - and perhaps inspire your next holiday beauty purchase.
Okay, I know this seems totally obvious - you're going on a sunny holiday so obviously you'll pack sunscreen. But to me, childhood memories of suncream conjure up images of skin plastered sticky white (with my parents telling me it'll sink in when it never did), a faintly tropical but somehow clinical smell and the repeated applications throughout the day - pretty much after every dip in the pool. So on a girls' holiday a few years ago when I was introduced to Riemann P20, it was a game-changer. A smooth and odourless oil that glides onto and sinks into the skin almost immediately, I had found my dream sunscreen - The One if you will. It's non-greasy, requires only one application a day and promotes a steady, gradual tan without the burning (I've burnt only once in the 4 years I've been using it).
The Surf Spray
You wake up with slightly sweaty, possibly slightly sticky hair (that fancy updo took some serious hairspray I'm sure) but just can't bear the thought of washing and drying it. The solution? A spritz of BB Surf Spray. Adding texture and volume with a matte finish, it'll look like you've just stepped off the beach rather than rolled out of bed. As someone with very fine hair (despite having lots of it), this is the perfect product to boost my roots and inject some life into my hair when it's looking a little dull - and when washing it is a chore I'm not willing to undertake. Combined with a spritz or two of Label M's Brunette Dry Shampoo, this is my hair saviour when I'm travelling.
My favourite fragrances in the whole world are from the Marc Jacobs Daisy range. I love them all. Daisy Dream is my number one, I think I must have got through about 4 large bottles by now. But without a doubt, Daisy Eau So Fresh comes in at a close second. With top notes of raspberry and pear on a plum and cedarwood base, it's fruity and floral, fresh as a new Spring day. I absolutely adore it. And this 20ml purse-size spray couldn't be more ideal for travelling, just slip it in your handbag (it's conveniently within the liquids allowance) and spritz when you need a little scented refresh after a long flight. And bonus, it comes with a 15ml refill bottle too!
The Night Cream
Admittedly, I never really had a proper skincare routine until last year. And even now, I have a selection of favourite products that I rotate regularly, as I find that my skin responds better this way. However, one product that is always on my bathroom shelf and that comes with me everywhere, is Lancôme's Génifique Youth Activating Night Cream. You might argue that I have absolutely no need for anti-ageing products right now, yet there is something about the texture of them - and in particular, this one - that my skin absolutely loves. It drinks it in like water, absorbing the sweet scent, the intense moisture and restorative ingredients. I wake up with smooth, slightly plump and refreshed skin - it's nothing short of miraculous. And especially after a day of travelling and exposure to dehydrating, dirty plane air, I wouldn't recommend any other product to get your skin feeling luxurious again.
Aside from the sunscreen, I use each of these products every day at home and with Lookfantastic's extensive range of travel-sized products, it's easy to continue my regular skin and haircare routines wherever I go - without taking the whole contents of my bathroom. So I'm intrigued, what would your must-haves be?
