So you’ve heard the rumours: coconut oil can be used for anything. Whether you’ve read about Suki using it to hydrate her skin or Miranda (that’s Kerr, not Hart) slathering it on her hair to achieve red-carpet glossy locks, there’s been a hype around coconut oil for a while. I’m sure you’ve rolled your eyes a few times at its listed uses – I mean, how much of a “miracle product” can it really be? But the truth is, it kind of is. Vita Coco‘s coconut oil is 100% raw and 100% organic. It’s cold pressed so that it retains its impressive nutritional value and preserves that gorgeous tropical scent that transports you to a white sandy beach somewhere in the Caribbean.
So, in celebration of the new #SwearByIt hub (your go-to destination for all things healthy and beautiful), I thought I’d share with you my favourite uses for coconut oil – or at least a few of them!
In my morning coffee.
Yes, really. If I’m having my coffee black, I’ll add a heaped teaspoon of coconut oil. It tastes delicious and has a whole host of health benefits; it increases your energy, boosts your metabolism and strengthens your immune system (wave goodbye to those pesky sniffles). I just stir it in but it’s actually recomended that you blend it, which creates a lovely frothy texture similar to milk.
Whether I’m making a stir fry or roasting vegetables, coconut oil is my go-to natural replacement for more processed oils. And if I’m really honest, I’ve never liked olive oil so I much prefer a subtle coconut flavour. It can also be used in baking – greasing your cake tray or spreading on toast and sweet breads as an alternative to butter (ideal if you can’t digest dairy).
As a moisturiser and treatment for problem skin.
The thick and creamy texture of coconut oil (if you’re unfamilar with its texture, it comes solidified in the tub and quickly melts when it comes into contact with skin) means it’s perfect for hydrating and nourishing my face and body. I apply it after a shower (usually before bed so I don’t have to worry about putting clothes on afterwards) or before I apply my makeup, as a hydrating primer. I’ve also found it works wonders on problem skin. I have small patches of eczema on my feet and not only does it stop them from itching, but it takes the dryness away and stops them from being sore too.
To tame and hydrate my hair.
Taking a little inspiration from Miranda (and a few hundred other glossy-maned celebrities), I now use coconout oil to hydrate my hair and stop it looking so frizzy. I tame fly-aways, nourish my dry ends and occasionally, leave it on overnight as a repairing hair mask. And honestly, you only need a pea-sized amount to do all of the above!
